Pass it over!
This annual exhibition by the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM) presents the most interesting and noteworthy work by UMPRUM students from the last few years. In contrast with the Academy’s regular Diploma and Artsemester exhibitions, this is a curated selection of the best output.
The exhibition maps and evaluates creative work in the Academy’s studios while reflecting developments in society and its current needs; it anticipates where contemporary trends are headed and showcases a number of projects with links to Pilsen. 2020 will be the first time the UMPRUM annual exhibition has been hosted outside the Academy, giving people outside Prague an opportunity to see students’ work.
The exhibition focuses on collaborations in UMPRUM students’ current work. By placing the selected works in context it seeks to critically examine various aspects of collaboration in an academic setting and reflect on the artist’s unique status (or not) in the creative process. It views collaboration as a network of causalities and interconnections with manufacturers, engineers, clients, teachers and other co-creators. Here “pass the ball!” is a metaphor for both an imperative and the willingness to collaborate. This need not in itself guarantee a positive outcome, but it offers a way for different disciplines to overcome their limitations.
